Instructional Methods to Reach Neurodiverse Students
- Monday, June 29
- 9-10 AM
- Room 183 C McCormick Place Convention Center, Chicago, IL
- Association of College and Research Libraries ACRL, American Library Association ALA.
Did you know that lectures and demonstrations are problematic forms of implicit instruction? These methods heavily rely on working memory and neurotypical processing speeds in the singular modality of visual auditory.
Join the Dyslexic Positive Libraries Initiative (DPLI) Team for this engaging session on how you can use high-quality, evidence-based instructional strategies to support all college students. This session is aimed at anyone providing informational or instructional services in an academic library setting. School and public library staff will also benefit from furthering their knowledge of these teaching principles.
Decades of brain science have taught us how to teach in ways that help students retain information. Let’s put that research into practice.
In this session, we’ll explore:
- Systematic, explicit instruction
- Social connection
- The “I do, we do, you do” model
- Multisensory application
- Identifying key, transferable vocabulary
- Notetaking shortcuts
- Technology use for neurodiverse learners
You know about the Dyslexic Positive Libraries Initiative from our work promoting high-quality literacy instruction and elevating dyslexic lived experience in libraries. We are equally committed to improving instructional practices in higher education. All DPLI resources are created or vetted by the neurodiverse community, and we bring a neurodiversity-inclusive lens to everything we do.
We’ll share practical examples for applying these methods to three common instructional tasks:
- Orienting students library resources and services
- Teaching effective keyword searching
- Obtaining help

Yes—you can reach all your students and support their cumulative success. We’ll show you how!
