Literacy in the Library: Sensory Handwriting (Fine Motor)

Use a textured surface such as the flannel, the perforated cardboard, the yoga mat and the bagged beads to form letters of the alphabet or spell phonetically irregular words. See The Reading Teacher’s Book of Lists for an irregular word reference.

These videos show this fun, simple activity in action. They feature an upper‑elementary student who used to “go missing” during reading time. The dyslexic child had secretly built a hiding space beneath the school stage. They have since been rescued and paired with a loving, dyslexia-valuing literacy specialist.
